Take steps to care for yourostomy and protect your health for the long-term.While you have an ostomy, remember to: empty your pouch when it is a third to a halffull; check the skin around your stoma for any irritation, redness or signs of infection;change your skin barrier as needed; and call your healthcare provider with anyquestions or concerns you may have.But, depending on the reason for your ostomy, there may come a time when it can bereversed.Reversing an ostomy requires surgery. It is very similar to the surgery you had tocreate the ostomy, but reverses the process. If you had a colostomy, surgery willreconnect your large intestine to the rest of your digestive system. If you had anileostomy, surgery will reconnect the small intestine to the rest of your digestivesystem. Your stoma will be closed and the waste from what you eat will now come outof your body through your anus.After surgery, you may have to stay in the hospital until your bowels are workingproperly again.
