TOPROL-XL®TRANSCRIPT (page 1 of 2)If you have high blood pressure, angina or other heart problems like heart failure,you may be prescribed Toprol XL. You may also be familiar with its generic name,metoprolol extended release. Toprol XL is a high alert medication, which means if youdo not take it exactly as prescribed, it may cause illness or injury.The heart is a muscle that pumps oxygen and nutrient rich blood through your body.When you have certain heart problems, your body makes hormones that can causeyour heart to pump too hard and too fast, leading to serious health problems. ToprolXL blocks these hormones, allowing your heart to relax and do its job with less strain.Toprol XL comes in a tablet. Your healthcare provider will decide how much you needto take, but dosages range from 25 milligrams to 200 milligrams and last 24 hours formost patients.Toprol XL is a powerful medication. Some people should not take it.Do not take Toprol XL if you are taking an MAO inhibitor, commonly used to treatdepression. Do not take Toprol XL if you are allergic to any ingredient in Toprol XL.If you have a very slow heart rate, severe heart failure, or certain types of irregularheartbeat, tell your healthcare provider. If you are pregnant, planning to get pregnantor are breastfeeding, talk to your healthcare provider before taking Toprol XL.Before taking Toprol XL, tell your healthcare provider if you have a history ofasthma; COPD; sleep apnea or other breathing problems; diabetes; liver, kidneyor thyroid problems; and problems with circulation. Before taking Toprol XL, giveyour healthcare provider a complete list of all other medications you use, includingvitamins and herbal supplements.Some side effects of Toprol XL include: dizziness, tired feeling, confusion and memoryproblems, nightmares or trouble sleeping, diarrhea, unusually cold hands or feet,rash,20% gradient meshor mild itching. If you notice any of these side effects tell your healthcare provider.Be aware that you are at an increased risk of falling while taking Toprol XL. This is not the complete list of side effects. Make sure youdiscuss all possible side effects with your healthcare provider.Take Toprol XL exactly as prescribed. Do not change your dose.Always swallow your dose whole. Do not chew or crush the tablet. With some doses,your healthcare provider may recommend you cut the tablet in half. If so, split thetablet evenly on the score mark and do not crush or chew the half tablet.Toprol XL should be taken once a day with, or immediately following, a meal.If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your nextdose, skip your missed dose and return to your normal medication schedule.Do not double dose. If you think you have taken too much Toprol XL, call 911.Talk to your healthcare provider before you stop taking this medication. If yousuddenly stop taking it, you can increase your risk of heart attack, chest pain and otherserious complications.If your healthcare provider decides you should stop taking it, you will gradually reduceits use and temporarily limit physical activity to protect your heart.Store Toprol XL away from moisture and direct sunlight. Your bathroom medicinecabinet is not the best place because of moisture. Do not leave your medication whereit can get too hot or too cold. Always store your medication out of sight and out ofreach of children, to prevent accidents.Toprol XL can help your heart work more easily.
