La hepatitis B es una enfermedad del hígado. Es causada por el virus de la  hepatitis B. El hígado es el órgano más grande dentro del cuerpo, se ubica debajo de la caja torácica. El hígado tiene muchos roles importantes. Filtra las sustancias químicas peligrosas de la sangre, ayuda a combatir las infecciones y ayuda a digerir la comida. Almacena nutrientes, vitaminas y energía. Si el hígado se infecta con este virus, se inflama. La inflamación en el cuerpo se debe a una lesión o a una infección. La inflamación causada por el virus de la hepatitis B, puede causar la capacidad del hígado para cumplir con su función. Puede tener una infección de hepatitis B aguda o breve. Es posible que tenga síntomas leves a graves que duren algunos meses o puede tener una infección continua y crónica.
