These are calledsocial determinants of health, or SDOH.Some examples are: Not having a safe place to live; Not having enough money to pay for things like food ormedicine; Not having regular child care; and not having a car or reliable transportation.Your patients may not bring up these concerns with you. They may be embarrassed or overwhelmed. Theymay not know that help is available.Addressing social determinants of health is vital. And you can help start the conversation. Here are somequestions you can ask about common challenges your patients may be facing: What kind of housing do youhave right now? How safe do you feel there? Do you ever worry about how you will pay for food or otheressentials like medicine? Do you have trouble getting child care when needed? Do you need help getting toyour medical appointments? And do you have health insurance or a medical card?Remember, your patients may be dealing with a lot right now. So approach these sensitive issues with careand empathy.
