La mayoría de las personas tiene dolor en la espalda baja en algún momento. El dolor en la espalda baja es síntoma de un problema. Una causa común del dolor en la espalda baja es una afección llamada estenosis espinal. La estenosis espinal es el estrechamiento de los espacios en la espalda, o columna vertebral. Este estrechamiento puede ejercer presión sobre la médula espinal o las raíces nerviosas. La columna vertebral está formada por huesos llamados vértebras, que tienen un centro hueco. Cuando se apilan una encima de la otra, forman un conducto que protege y sostiene la columna vertebral. Los nervios, llamados raíces nerviosas, se ramifican y salen de la columna vertebral a través de espacios entre las vértebras y se dirigen a diferentes partes del cuerpo.
